10 Narrative Conflicts That Help Primary Students Write Better Stories

A strong narrative does not need a huge disaster, a villain or a magical twist. It needs a character who wants something, meets a meaningful obstacle, and must make a difficult choice.

A Simple Conflict Formula|

Goal → Obstacle → Escalation → Difficult Choice

Students can choose one conflict below, then change the character, setting, object and ending. The aim is not to memorise a whole story, but to practise building a flexible plot.

How to Make Any Conflict Your Own|怎样把素材变成自己的故事

  • Change the relationship: friend, sibling, classmate, grandparent or teacher.
  • Change the core object: a key, medal, book, photograph, watch or model.
  • Add time pressure: before returning it, before closing time, before a performance or before the weather changes.
  • Change the final choice: confess, give up, return, speak, take responsibility or seek help.

Avoiding Clichés|

  • Avoid relying on disasters, kidnapping or sudden disappearances.
  • Do not use “It was all a dream” to erase the consequences.
  • Do not let an adult solve every important problem for the character.
  • Keep the event manageable, but make the choice genuinely difficult.
